THE BIRTHDAY PARTY

Once there was a girl named Megan and she was born October 2, 1992.  Everything was fine until Megan was seven years old and she slipped into a pool.  She fell in the shallow end. Megan broke her leg and sprained her arm.  Megan was rushed to the hospital.  Her mom was terrified.

Megan had to stay in the hospital for four days.  She came out with a wheel chair.

The doctor said, “She cannot go anywhere without her wheelchair.”

When Megan went back to school everyone stared at her.  Megan started to notice it was hard being handicapped.

“Why are you guys staring at me?” asked Megan.

“Look at you, you’re in a wheelchair,” said Megan’s friend Tiffany.

Tiffany looked a little bit like Megan but she was different.  Megan had blonde hair and blue eyes and her favorite color was blue.  Tiffany had brown hair, green eyes and her favorite color was purple.  The only thing they had in common was their favorite sport, basketball.

“Last year you were on crutches.  This year you’re in a wheelchair.  Next year are you going to have a cane?” hollered Tiffany.

“Calm down, Tiffany.  Why are you screaming at me?” screamed Megan.

The bell rang.

“I’ll tell you after,” said Tiffany.

“But I want to know now,” said Megan.

“I said, later, Megan!”

“Okay!” screamed Tiffany.

Megan didn’t answer.  When it was lunchtime Megan went to go ask Tiffany what she was going to tell her.

“What were you going to tell me, Tiff?” asked Megan.

Instead of Tiffany answering, she said, “I don’t want to be your friend anymore.”

“Why?”

“Because every time you get hurt, you get mean.”

“How can you do this to me?” screamed Megan.

Tiffany was Megan’s only friend.  It’s hard to find friends like Tiffany.  Megan knew Tiffany for six years.  Megan and Tiffany never had fights.

Then Megan ran back and told Tiffany, “Being handicapped isn’t fun!  Do you know how it feels to be this way, Tiffany?” questioned Megan.

“No,” said Tiffany.  “Then, why do you treat me like this?  Next Monday is my birthday and you’re not going to be invited to my birthday party.  End of discussion,” said Megan.

Megan’s friendship with Tiffany had come to an end.  When Megan got home she went straight to her room and started to throw away everything Tiffany had given her.  Megan’s room had practically nothing in it any more.

Megan’s mom came up to see what she was doing.  “Honey, what happened?  Do you want to talk about this?” asked Megan’s mom.

The phone rang.  Megan went to see who it was.  It was Tiffany.  Megan didn’t pick up.

“Who was it?” asked Megan’s mom.

“Wrong number,” said Megan.  “Tiffany doesn’t want to be my friend any more,” said Megan.

“Go to sleep, Honey.  We’ll talk about this in the morning,” said Megan’s mom.

The next day was Saturday.  It was almost Megan’s birthday and she had no friends.  Megan was an only child.  Megan felt horrible.

On Saturday and Sunday she watched TV all day long.

“Today is my birthday,” said Megan.

All of Megan’s cousins came to her birthday party.  Most of her cousins were teenagers.  The only cousin her age was Alexandra.

Alexandra was friends with Tiffany.

“Where’s Tiffany?” asked Alexandra.

“Tiffany.  Oh, Tiffany.  She couldn’t come,” said Megan.

Alexandra’s sister, Danielle, came.  Danielle was fourteen and in the ninth grade.

“Where’s, Tiff?” asked Danielle.

“She couldn’t come,” said Megan.

“Time to open the presents,” said Megan’s mom.

Megan wished she would be out of her wheelchair.

Two months later Megan went to see her doctor.  The doctor said everything healed so she would not need the wheelchair.

“My wish has come true,” hollered Megan.

Eventually, Megan would be friends with Tiffany again, too.
